Greece v Russia Live
Much like in the past, Greece is once again entering the FIBA World Championship as one of the best international teams, hoping to clinch a medal in Turkey this month. Thus, Vassilis Spanoulis and the Greeks will take on Russia in Group C on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. GMT.
In contrast, Russia is still in transition and competing without some of its stars such as Andrei Kirilenko from the Utah Jazz and Viktor Khryapa from CSKA Moscow. Nonetheless, the Russians managed to secure a convincing 9-point win versus a very competitive team from Puerto Rico before falling to the hosts from Turkey on Sunday afternoon. So far, coach David Blatt's squad performed exceptionally well at the defensive end of the floor, holding opponents to just 66 points per contest. Offensively, forward Sergey Monya from Dynamo Moscow has been Russia's most dominant player, averaging 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
Greece on the other hand got off to an excellent start at the 2010 FIBA World Championship with two straight wins versus China and Puerto Rico. Even though the team around Vassilis Spanoulis and Dimitris Diamantidis did not play up to its potential, their performance was still good enough for a 89-81 and 83-80 win respectively. However, Greece will most likely have to tighten up its defense down the stretch to compete with some of the better teams in the elimination round. Offensively, Spanoulis has been the team's primary scorer at 23.5 points per game where as Dimitris Diamantidis proved once again that he is a solid overall player, averaging no less than 11.5 points, 6.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds in 30 minutes per game. Considering said circumstances, Greece can rightfully be considered the favorite to come out on top of Group C with a win on Thursday night. Nonetheless, the Greeks might have to pull off a better defensive effort to prevent themselves from experiencing a loss in their last group game.
