Lebanon v Spain Live
Considering that Spain was generally considered the team with the best chance of giving the United States a run for their money at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, the Spaniards did not remotely live up to everyone's expectations so far. Thus, Marc Gasol and the Spanish team will try to pull their act together when they face Lebanon in Izmir on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. GMT.
Unlike Spain, Lebanon certainly surprised basketball fans around the world with its strong performance at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey thus far. More precisely, the Lebanese team secured a double-digit win versus Canada and suddenly finds itself in an excellent position to advance to the elimination stage. Considering that Lebanon is just 24th in the FIBA World Ranking and never made it far in any international tournament, it is certainly surprising that the team around Fadi El Khatib is able to keep up with its competition. Even though the Lebanese might have lost their second group game versus France, they are still in the race for a spot in the elimination round.
Spain on the other hand failed to play up to its potential as Rudy Fernandez and company dropped their first game versus France. Given the fact that France played without most of its NBA stars such as Tony Parker, Rodrigue Beaubois, Ronny Turiaf and Mickael Pietrus, the loss certainly raises some questions regarding Spain's hope for a title at the 2010 FIBA World Championship. That said, the team around Marc Gasol was able to bounce back on Sunday as they secured a convincing 101-84 win. Taking everything into account, it is hard to see Lebanon overcoming Spain's individual talent on Wednesday night. Nonetheless, the Spanish side will have to play concentrated at both ends of the floor throughout the game to prevent themselves from another disappointment in the group stage.
