Puerto Rico v Cote dIvoire Live
Entering the 2010 FIBA World Championship hoping to make it far in the tournament, the Puerto Ricans certainly failed to live up to their own expectations. Thus, Carlos Arroyo and Puerto Rico will try to get back on track when they face Cote d'Ivoire on Thursday at 1 p.m. GMT.
Without any doubts, very few expected the team from the Ivory Coast to even qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. After all, the African team is just 41st in the FIBA World Ranking and qualified with a surprising second place finish at last year's FIBA Africa tournament. To make things even more difficult, Cote d'Ivoire will have to play without starting point guard Pape-Philippe Amagou from Kavala BC who is sidelined by an injury. However, Mouloukou Diabate stepped up and led the team offensively averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Even though the Ivory Coast experienced a frustrating blowout loss versus Turkey on opening night, the team subsequently bounced back versus China in a respectable 73-83 loss.
In contrast, Puerto Rico was certainly hoping for a better start as the team around JJ Barea from the Dallas Mavericks dropped two in a row versus Russia and Greece. Especially the 10-point loss versus the Russian team was very disappointing as Puerto Rico did not lack individual talent but the necessary teamplay at both ends of the floor. Likewise, the fact that NBA guard Carlos Arroyo from the Miami Heat had to sit out versus Greece due to a nagging injury did not make things any easier. Going into their game versus the Ivory Coast, Puerto Rico should have a significant edge over the African side but will have to improve drastically down the stretch in order to have a real chance in the elimination stage.
