Russia v New Zealand Live
After a surprisingly solid performance in the group-stage, New Zealand is hoping to continue their offensive minded up-tempo basketball in the elimination round. Thus, the Kiwis will be looking for a win in their encounter with Russia in Istanbul on Monday at 6 p.m. GMT.
While some might have doubted the shorthanded team from Russia before the 2010 FIBA World Championship got underway, there is no doubt that Sergey Monya and company did not look like an easy opponent so far. More specifically, Russia was not only able to overcome China with a 89-80 win but also surprised many basketball fans when they beat Greece in their last group game 73-69. Playing excellent defense, the squad of Coach David Blatt beat Puerto Rico 75-66 as well and rallied to a second place finish in Group C. At the other end of the floor, Sergey Monya from BC Khimki led the team with 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
In contrast, New Zealand experienced its fair share of defensive breakdowns but showed exciting offense at times which ultimately helped the team around Kirk Penney to a third place in group D. Surprisingly, the rather unknown team from Oceania was able to beat France in a 82-70 win and looked very comfortable heading to the round of the last 16. Especially Kirk Penny from the NZ Breakers is having a terrific tournament thus far, averaging no less than 25.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest. Considering the aforementioned circumstances, both teams might find themselves on a relatively level playing field when the game gets underway on Monday night. Where as Russia is undoubtedly one of the better defensive teams, Kirk Penney and company have repeatedly shown that they have no trouble putting up numbers.
