Spain v Canada Live
Even though Spain has not been playing particularly consistent at the 2010 FIBA World Championship thus far, Rudy Fernandez and company are still one of the favorites to clinch a medal down the stretch. Thus, Spain will take on Joel Anthony and the Canadian team in their last game before the elimination stage in Izmir on Thursday at 1 p.m. GMT.
When Canada dropped their opening game 71-81 versus a rather mediocre team from Lebanon, many questioned whether the team around Joel Anthony from the Miami Heat would be any real competition for their other opponents in Group D. However, the Canadians elevated their level of play significantly and almost came away with a victory in their encounter with Lithuania. More specifically, Canada was already up by 17 points in the third quarter before Linas Kleiza and the Lithuanian squad made a run to clinch a clutch 70-68 victory. Offensively, Joel Anthony has been Canada's go-to guy so far, averaging 14.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Spain on the other hand started the 2010 FIBA World Championship with a surprising loss versus a shorthanded French team. Even though the Spaniards subsequently bounced back with a fairly uncontested 101-84 win over New Zealand, it remains to be seen whether the team around Marc Gasol will be able to become a real contender as the tournament goes on. One key advantage could be Spain's wide range of offensive options such as Rudy Fernandez from the Portland Trail Blazers who has been putting up 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest so far. Likewise, Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies has been very efficient in the low-post area, averaging 14.5 points and 5.5 rebounds where as point guard Ricky Rubio has been dishing out no less than 7 assists per game. Therefore, Spain will enter its matchup with Canada as everyone's favorite to clinch another win in the last game of Group D on Thursday.
