Turkey v France Live
Even though France experienced some ups and downs in the first week of play, the team around Boris Diaw from the Charlotte Bobcats still managed to make it to the elimination round with a fourth seed in Group D. Thus, France will face Hedo Turkoglu and the Turkish team in Istanbul on Sunday at 6 p.m. GMT.
In contrast, Turkey could not have hoped for a better start at the 2010 FIBA World Championship. More specifically, the team around Ersan Ilyasova managed to win five straight in the group stage and has been playing excellent basketball so far. Considering that Turkey arguably was in the toughest group, it is certainly remarkable that coach Bogdan Tanjevic''s squad overcame Puerto Rico, Greece, Russia and China. Especially the 87-40 blowout win versus Jianlian Yi and the Chinese team demonstrated that Turkey can rightfully be considered a contender at the 2010 FIBA World Championship. Leading Turkey's offense is Ersan Ilyasova who has been averaging 16.5 points and 9 rebounds per contest. Likewise, Hedo Turkoglu once again showed that he can distribute the ball, putting up 9.8 points, 4.0 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game.
France on the other hand started the tournament with a great game versus Spain which ended in a surprising 72-66 win for the French. However, Boris Diaw and company subsequently lost to Lithuania as well as New Zealand. That said, one should take into consideration that France is playing without most of its NBA stars, including All-Star Tony Parker from the San Antonio Spurs. Up to this point, Nicolas Batum from the Portland Trailblazers led the squad of coach Vincent Collet as he put up 12.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether France will be able to overcome Turkey in front of its home-crowd in Istanbul. After all, the Turkish team has been playing excellent team defense so far and had no trouble scoring at the other end of the floor.
