USA v Angola Live
So far, the United States had no trouble living up to their contender role as they rallied to a first place finish in Group B after five consecutive wins. Thus, Kevin Durant and the American basketball team will take on Angola in the first elimination round in Istanbul on Monday at 3 p.m. GMT.
Where as everyone expected the U.S. to make it out of the group-stage, very few thought that Angola could make it to the elimination round. However, the champion of the 2009 FIBA Africa tournament managed to beat Jordan as well as Germany in an exciting overtime game 92-88. That being said, the performance of the team around Olimpio Cipriano was very inconsistent and left much to be desired at times. Offensively, Joaquim Gomes from Primeiro de Agosto led the team throughout much of the group stage, averaging 11.6 points and 6.8 rebounds.
The United States on the other hand had no trouble steamrolling through the preliminary round as the team around Kevin Durant got off to a five-game winning streak in Group B. In fact, only Brazil was able to force the American dream team into a close game which ultimately ended in a 70-68 win for the U.S. That said, the American team has shown before that it is not impossible to beat them on a bad day, yet they can undoubtedly count on the best overall team. Offensively, Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder put up no less than 17.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest. Likewise, Eric Gordon from the Los Angeles Clippers and Chauncey Billups from the Denver Nuggets were able to contribute 10.2 and 9.4 points per game respectively. Therefore, it appears to be a justified assumption that the United States should be able to overcome Angola on Monday night. Ultimately, the FIBA Africa champions will most likely be overwhelmed by the U.S. as well as individual talent and teamplay are concerned.
